Dealing with the emotions of being laid off can be challenging. It’s normal to experience a range of feelings during such a significant change. Here are some suggestions to help you move forward in your career.

After a layoff, there are several steps you can take to move forward and find new employment:

  • Process your feelings: Losing your job can be a difficult and emotional experience. It’s important to take the time to process your feelings and come to terms with the change.
  • Update your resume and LinkedIn profile: Make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and highlight your skills and accomplishments. This will make it easier for you to apply for jobs and connect with potential employers.
  • Network: Reach out to your professional network, including former colleagues, friends and family, and let them know you are looking for a new job. They may have leads or be able to connect you with potential employers.
  • Search for job openings: Use job search engines, company career pages and professional networking sites to find job openings that match your skills and experience.
  • Consider additional education or training: If you are finding it difficult to find a job in your field, consider additional education or training to develop new skills and increase your marketability.
  • Seek for help: Reach out to organizations that provide career counseling, job search assistance, and other resources to help you find a new job.
  • Take care of yourself: Finding a new job can be stressful and time-consuming. Remember to take care of yourself, both physically and mentally, during this time.
  • Be open to different opportunities: Be open to different types of jobs, industries and locations. Sometimes, a new opportunity can lead to a better fit, or a chance to learn new skills and grow in your career.

Here’s Some Resources to Help with your Search:

  • Job search engines: Websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Monster are popular job search engines that allow users to search for jobs by keyword, location, and industry.
  • Company career pages: Many companies have their own career pages on their websites, where they post job openings and accept applications.
  • Professional networking sites: Websites like LinkedIn allow users to connect with potential employers, search for job openings, and apply for jobs.
  • Recruiting agencies: Recruiting agencies can help match job seekers with potential employers and provide career counseling and job search assistance.
  • Employee Referral Programs: Many companies offer employee referral programs which can be a great way to get your foot in the door with a company you are interested in.
  • Social media: Many companies and recruiters use social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to post job openings and interact with potential candidates.
  • Government websites: Some government websites like USAJobs, help job seekers to find job openings in government agencies and organizations.
  • Virtual Career Fairs: Virtual career fairs are becoming increasingly popular and are a great way to connect with recruiters and learn about job opportunities without the need to travel.

  1. I also spent quite a bit of time reviewing all my bookmarks, chrome extensions, and tools…as I had the time to streamline, research and test new ones, and update outdated things in various files on the computer and browser.

I looked for a bunch of new blogs and articles and catch up on reading. Created a list on Feedly to get future articles of good sources.

I also recommend signing up for a trial membership with LinkedIn (if you don’t have one) to access all the LinkedIn Learning. I took over 100 courses while I was laid off.
