GitHub is the leading online repository for open-source coding, boasting 28 million users and 57 million repositories. It’s an ideal platform for Talent Sourcers to discover qualified software developers among its active monthly user base.

Here’s how Recruiters can Benefit for Being on GitHub:

  • Searching for potential candidates using specific keywords and skills related to the engineering role.
  • Reviewing a candidate’s GitHub profile to assess their experience, contributions, and coding skills.
  • Utilizing GitHub’s built-in search and filtering options to narrow down the candidate pool based on specific criteria, such as location or programming languages.
  • Engaging with potential candidates through GitHub’s built-in messaging system or through email (if provided in their profile).
  • Leveraging sourcing tools that integrate with GitHub to automate and streamline the recruiting process.
  • Joining relevant communities on GitHub to connect with engineers and stay informed about industry trends and developments.
  • Using Recruiter account to access more information about the candidate.

I plan to compile a comprehensive list of sourcing tools for recruiting on GitHub. The tools will not be listed in any specific order but will provide a range of capabilities including finding emails, searching profiles, and analyzing rankings and rep scores.

1. Awesome Autocomplete for GitHub

This tool helps by appearing in the search bar on GitHub when you pose a search. From the creators page: GitHub is quite big for us, we use their search bar every day but it was not optimal for our needs: so we just re-built Github’s search the way we thought it should be and we now share it with the community via this Chrome extension. With this tool you will be able to easily explore GitHub with simplicity and ease.

2. OctoHR

One of my all-time favorite extensions for GitHub profiles. When viewing a profile this tool will showcase the languages the user is currently using. You can then use this in your recruiter emails when passively reaching out to a lead. The candidate will honestly be impressed that you took the time to review their reps and coding projects within GitHub.

From OctoHr:  This tool helps recruiters to get more information about developers. Simplifies search for the new candidates in GitHub.

3. OctoHunt

This tool helps with searching and analytics.. Just enter the technology and location and get the results with data about repos and followers of the candidate. It will also predict their hiring status on a profile page.

4. GitHub Hovercard

GitHub Hovercard provides neat hovercards for GitHub. You can hover over any profile and get value intel on any profile. It brings you instant access to user/repo/issue/commit information from anywhere on GitHub.

5. Github Email

Maybe you done the .patch hacks (here)? There’s an extension that can do this automatically! Simply type in the Developers GitHub profile within the tool and it will find an active user email address associated with the profile.

6. Github User Languages

This extension will also collect analytics on the developer’s profile. Once you view a profile it will create a diagram of skills.

7. GitHub Hovercard

This will show you the amount of followers and repos of a developer.

8. Git-Awards

Discover the rankings of any GitHub. This will help if you are trying to find the best available talent within a certain location.

9. Git-Logs

GitHub News: Discover the Top Trending Repos. Easily search trending topics within this site.

10. DB Developer

Contact Tech Workers with the Tech Recruiting & Lead Gen Database Reach more passive candidates & sales prospects with a database of 30M tech workers. This database consists of a wide range of tech people, many not found elsewhere, along with tech-specialized data that enables better targeting.

11. Profile Summary for GittHub profiles

Enter GitHub username and get a quick summary of that individual profile.

12. EmailOnGitHub

Once installed go to GitHub -> user’s info (email and if user is available for hire) will be displayed right under user’s login and if no email found you’ll see the message “email not found.”

13. GitHubber

This tool dives into Github profiles and returns condensed and summarized information within your Github Search results.

14. Better Search for GitHub

Save your favorite filters when searching in GitHub repos.  You have many projects to manage in Github, and there are too many searches that you have to do over and over again. With this extension, searching your issues and pull-requests in GitHub is much easier so that you can manage your projects more easily!

15. Github Super Search

Github Goto Anything Search. Adds ctrl-shift-p key combo to popup github’s search. Inspired by Sublime Text’s Goto Anywhere feature. This will help you search more quickly through profiles on GitHub.

16. Refined GitHub

Simplifies the GitHub interface and adds useful features.

Highlights include:

  • Open all your notifications at once
  • Copy a file’s content
  • Full names of comment authors are shown next to their username
  • Followers you know are shown on profile pages
  • Badge on user’s profile if they follow you
  • The news feeds automatically expands when you scroll down

A platform to tell you about user statistics on Github. You just need to enter the name / company name there to see graphs about the technologies that the developer uses, the stars, the number of forked repositories.
