I recently read a post that claimed that generalist recruiters and sourcers were ruining the talent acquisition industry. I could not disagree more with what that author was implying. In order to become successful in recruiting you need to start as a generalist. You need to get your feet wet within full-cycle recruiting before you can truly master the field. The more experience you gain, the more you can then specialize in certain job-market niches.
You might be new to the talent sourcing game. When I first started out in my career, I felt like I constantly trying to prove my worth to the team. For better or worse, I’m a perfectionist at heart and I struggle at times with the rollercoaster ride of recruiting. There’s a lot of uncertainty and there are times when you just need to hear that you are valued. That’s why I wanted to highlight why YOU the talent sourcer add incredible value to an in-house talent acquisition team.
1. Much More Than a Hire
Whether you work at a startup or a well-established company – you are delivering measurable results. Every single hire helps drive more success to the company. One day it hit me: I entered the cafeteria at my company and realized that 9 out of the 12 employees in front of me were people that I helped source. You are delivering results by finding the right candidates and changing your company for the better.
2. Supporting Team Workloads
Recruiters are overloaded with tasks. Many jobs requirements necessitate skills that are in high demand and we’re currently in a challenging job seeker market. Teams don’t have the time to do a deep dive and find available talent. Talent Sourcers can help find those purple squirrels and greatly support their teammates in the process.
3. Saving the Company Money
Each hire filled internally helps save your company a third party placement fee. Depending on the comp range you could be saving your company an average of $20-30K per position. That means that if you average 3-4 hires a month, within a year you’re saving the company over $500k in placement fees.
4. Promoting the Company Brand
Every time you connect with an applicant over email or the phone you are being a brand ambassador for your company. You are an advocate, highlighting your company’s EVP and culture with them. All these outreaches help to better promote your company’s image within your community. In some cases, you may be the only person they speak with at your company, so take pride in representing it well.
5. Building Connections
Talent sourcers can help build an active referral network. Whether you are looking to connect with diversity groups or associations, you are in the position to network and attract talent that might be otherwise hard to reach.
6. Attracting Top Talent
We’re facing the most competitive job market in many years. Talent sourcers are competing locally with other companies for top talent. Job seekers are facing counteroffers, with some applicants considering 2-3 offers all at once. The market is super tight. Having a talent sourcer in this competitive market can make all the difference.
7. Building Pipelines for Future Needs
Talent sourcers can help build a pipeline for future needs. The more you can plan on future hiring needs, the better you can be prepared. Talent sourcers can help make a lasting impact on the future needs of the company. This will help speed up the hiring process and save the company in time and additional recruiting costs.
Concluding Thoughts
Adding a Talent Sourcer to your company will add tremendous value to your team. They do way more than just get a hire. They are brand advocates, powerful networkers, and support the team in so many ways. They are so valuable and truly needed on a talent acquisition team.
