As we finish out the year, it’s good to reflect on what recruiting trends or other indicators that may take place in 2023. The past several years have been a challenging time for recruiters and sourcers in any industry. Scenarios included a Political upheaval, Covid pandemic, and impending recession news. Many companies including: Meta, Amazon, Twitter, Intel, and others have started doing layoffs in Q4.

It is difficult to make accurate predictions about the future of recruiting, as it is subject to changes in the job market, technological advancements, and other factors. However, based on current trends and developments, here are a few potential predictions for recruiting in 2023:

Increased use of artificial intelligence and automation: As technology continues to advance, recruiting teams are likely to use more artificial intelligence (AI) and automation tools to streamline recruiting processes such as resume screening and scheduling interviews.

Remote hiring and virtual interviews will continue to be a norm: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to remote work and this trend is likely to continue in 2023. As a result, recruiting teams will have to adapt their processes to accommodate remote hiring and virtual interviews.

Emphasis on candidate experience: As competition for top talent increases, companies will focus on providing a positive candidate experience throughout the recruitment process. This could include providing clear and timely communication, as well as offering virtual tours and other interactive experiences.

Increase in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) focus: Companies will continue to prioritize DEI in their recruitment process, to attract and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce. This could include implementing DEI-focused recruitment strategies, training for recruiters and hiring managers, and ensuring fair and unbiased hiring practices.

Greater use of social media in recruiting: Social media platforms will continue to be an important tool for recruiting teams to reach out to potential candidates and promote job openings. Companies will also be using them to create a personal brand and showcase the company culture to attract top talent.

It’s important to note that the recruitment industry is constantly evolving, and these predictions are based on current trends and may change. Companies should stay informed of the latest developments in the industry and adapt their recruitment strategies accordingly.

Here’s what I think will play out in the new year for most Talent Acquisition teams:

Q1 of 2023:

  • Recession increases
  • Hiring solely for backfills only
  • Hiring freezes continue across industries
  • Recruiting teams focused more on creating projects and other activities outside of hiring
  • Teams building talent pipelines – building robust observability frameworks (Jung Kim).
  • Push for more D&I sourcing and research strategies
  • Decline in Recruiting Tools Budgets for 2023
  • Lower headcounts for hiring external recruiters
  • Layoffs in the tech and finance fields

Q2 of 2023:

  • Recession
  • Still cautious of hiring headcounts and team backfills
  • Continued layoffs across all industry sectors

Q3 of 2023:

  • Recession
  • Still cautious of hiring headcounts and team backfills
  • Continued layoffs across all industry sectors

Q4 of 2023:

  • Recession decreases
  • Full ramp up in all ORG departments and teams
  • Hiring back contract and full-time recruiters
  • Talent acquisition teams having a difficult time hiring recruiters based on demand

Do you think my predictions have any merit?  I feel confident going into 2023 that hiring will continue to rise even with a threat of a looming recession.
