Being able to search for someone’s LinkedIn profile using an email address is very important hack as a Sourcer. There used to be several ways for a Recruiter to cross reference someone’s email using Rapportive, Sales Navigator, and most recently the URL manipulation hack using sales navigator. Unfortunately, all of these methods no longer work.
Recently, Rapportive and now Sales Navigator have been quietly shuttered by LinkedIn. Sales Navigator was a sales tool designed for LinkedIn users to build their own personal CRM’s. With Sales Navigator you could manipulate a URL and cross reference an email address and connect it with a profile on LinkedIn.
You could simply change the email address at the end of the URL to see if it was linked to a LinkedIn user account for example:
https://www.linkedin.com/sales/gmail/profile/viewByEmail/kidderupdates@gmail.com
With the recent changes to Sales Navigator this no longer works. If you try and do the search query you will get this message stating: “Something went wrong while displaying this profile. Please reload or try again later.”
Thankfully, there is another way to use an email address to find a LinkedIn profile. Since 2017, Sales Navigator has integrated within Outlook and It makes sense since Microsoft owns both companies that you can connect them together.
Here’s how to connect an email to cross reference a LinkedIn profile:
1. Create a covert Microsoft Account (here).
2. Sign in to the web based version of Outlook using this new account (here).
3. After you login into Outlook go into your contacts section (here).
4. Create a new contact by selecting “Add a contact” and enter in the applicants email address.
5. Click on the profile photo and with the new sub-window select LinkedIn.
6. Click “Continue to LinkedIn” on the pop-up and then sign in to your account.
7. Return to Outlook and the sub-window will now show the LinkedIn profile of any individual who has a profile linked to the email address that you entered. If nothing shows up then that email doesn’t have an active profile.
