How to Attract and Hire Software Engineers

I’ve been recruiting engineers for roughly a decade now. The need for Software Engineers is in high demand and finding the right technical talent can be difficult. With hiring in this division being so competitive, it is important that you know how to attract the best people and also ensure that you position yourself as an awesome employer. One huge benefit at my current company is allowing employees to bring in there dogs. I’m allowed to bring in my Golden Doodle Henry and it really impacts my work week in a positive way.

Check out the following tips to learn how you can beat the competition and win over that perfect candidate.

 

1. Stand Out Above the Competition

When it comes to hiring personnel in the technical fields, the market currently favors employees, due to the hiring shortage. With that being said, as you encounter quality candidates, take action quickly by making an enticing offer. Otherwise, you risk losing out to a rival because, rest assured, they’re just as interested in that particular individual.

 

2. Show You’re Interested

Avoid sending the typical form letters or email notifications and make a great first impression with personal outreach. Contact potential candidates promptly via telephone. If you need to leave a message, include a phone number where you can be contacted. This initiative will show that you’re genuinely interested in the individual.

 

3. Share Details

During the introductory conversation, point out specifics from their resume that were impressive to you. Likewise, share details about your company and why you’re hiring for the position. Explain how their skills match your needs, and why you think they would be a great fit in your org or project.

 

4. Amaze Them

If you successfully lure them in for an interview, take full advantage of the one on one collaboration. Besides discussing the logistics of the position, make time for casual conversation as well. Remember, your goal is to hire the right person for the position. While a resume can certainly look impressive, ensuring personalities need to mesh well, among the team as a whole.

 

During the interview, introduce the candidate to other team members, gift them some promotional treasures, and take them out for lunch. This shows your involvement with the recruiting process and shows that you care on a personal level as well.

 

5. Let the Engineers Talk Shop

Regardless if you have in-house recruiters or otherwise when the time arrives to discuss specifics about the position, have your existing engineers contact the candidate. This not only exhibits respect, but it offers the chance for discussion about what the job entails.

 

Certainly, you want to show the potential new employee how awesome your company and your team are; and what better way than to provide the opportunity for departmental communication that pertains to day-to-day processes.

 

6. Tell your Employer Brand Story

Every company has a unique culture or DNA. Having a bean-bag chair or ping pong room doesn’t showcase a companies environment. Make sure you talk about what project your team is working on. I always like to talk about different problems the team is facing and is looking to solve by hiring additional headcounts. If your company allows pets in the office or does a monthly happy-hour event make sure to bring that up.

 

While it may seem odd that as the employer, you’re going out of your way to make a great first impression, the competition in this tech field is undeniable. Great talent and amiable individuals can be difficult to find, so don’t hesitate to boast about the positive aspects of you, your team, and your company. That first conversation can get you off to a great start, but showing the candidate why you’re the best choice requires you to take action as well.

 

Nowadays, people are more focused on working for much more than a paycheck. These individuals have a set of values and ethics they live by and as such want to work for a company that operates in a way that aligns with them on a personal level.
