Think LinkedIn and Indeed are monopolizing the job searching market? Yes, that certainly has been the case for the last few years, but Google has it’s own ideas. That’s good news for you – the job searcher! The more sites there are, the better your chances of finding your dream job. Google recently launched their own job search engine Google for Jobs. This site aggregates with many other sites like CareerBuilder, Monster, and company career websites etc. It’s a great all in one place to start searching for a new job. Overall, it’s about time Google got into the job board recruiting space.
1. What’s in it for job seekers?
The job search can now be done via the normal google search function. Try typing in the type of job you are searching for and jobs near you will come up automatically! “HR jobs” brought up over 100 jobs in my area.
Once you click on one of the listings, you are taken to a dashboard with the role you clicked on and a sidebar to review other positions matching what you are looking for.
If you want to apply for the job, you can click on the source to officially apply. There is also an option to turn on alerts for jobs matching that criteria if you want to opt for that.
2. The Pros
I love that it pulls job postings from several different places. Even LinkedIn! It also appears to pull listings directly from company websites. That is definitely a benefit that other sites don’t offer. LinkedIn and Indeed require companies to pay for their listings, so you are only seeing those listings if you use their search. I also like that at the bottom of the listing there is a link to search Google for more about the company. It helps if you want to do some research before you apply.
3. The Cons
One area that LinkedIn does better is that you can apply via LinkedIn for some of the jobs. Perhaps that is something Google will add in the future. Also, when I limited my search to the past three days, there were only a couple of postings but when I went on LinkedIn there were many more. Both search sites bring in a lot of jobs that are not related to HR at all (like nursing jobs galore!) which is pretty annoying.
Bottom Line
Google getting into the job search game is super exciting. I think it is a great addition to the field of job searching and one that will continue to improve. Again, it’s about time Google got into the recruiting space.
